THE FUTURE OF HEALTH

  The most enduring image of humanity's exploration of space has turned out to be the sight of a small blue planet orbiting an ordinary star in an out-of-the-way corner of the galaxy. From space our planet looks fragile, and its blue color distinguishes it from anything else as far as our telescopes can see. Water is what makes the Earth so extraordinary; water not only colors our world but provides it with the capacity to harbor life. In the "purest" sense, "water is life" because one is not possible without the other. Recognizing the uniqueness of our planet and the primary role water plays in our lives and in our health and well-being, can only lead us to view water in a new strategic and reverential way.

WATER IS NOT "JUST" WATER ANYMORE

In the same way that water is the key to life and the health of our planet, water and hydration are the primary keys to our health. Medical science has at last made this discovery. We are aware that water is essential for our survival, but we are only now wak¬ing up to the primary and critical role water plays in our health. Aided by new water science, we are discovering we can enhance its com¬plex chemistry and that water is not "just" water anymore. And now a new class and generation of advanced hydration and nutritionally enhanced waters have been designed to take us beyond simply surviving, to actually thriving as fit, healthy, high-performance individuals. The discoveries around water and its new science will have profound effects on our national and global health in the twenty-first century.

In seeking better health, for ourselves, and for our families, we would be wise to inform ourselves about water. To assist you, I have written this water primer to help you learn not only about its vital role and new science, but to clear up some confusion about the types, brands, and bottled water sources currently available to us.

This water primer will introduce you to your Four Rights of Water and to a new water etiquette that will place you on a new path to wellness, and in the flow of a new foundation to health.

WATER BEINGS ON THE WATER PLANET

Our blue planet is colored by and bathed in water. And as water beings on a water planet, we are likewise composed mostly of this aqueous element. Water makes up 90% of our blood, 85% of our brain, and 70% of the rest of our body. Even our bones and skeletal structure are 30% water. Our body fluids are an internal ocean that regulates and drives all body functions in the same way that water and water cycles govern organic life on Earth. Seen from this perspective, water must play a primary role in our diet and health care and we need to be ever concerned about the quality and quantity of the water we consume-especially since water is also what the body uses to cleanse itself of cellular waste and the toxins intro¬duced into our bodies through food and air. As water people of the water planet, we should logically make it a priority to consume the highest quality and an adequate quantity of water on a daily basis. When it comes to our health, the two most important decisions we make every day have to do with the quantity and quality of water we consume. If you make the correct choices around these two decisions every day, you will be providing a fundamental foundation and be "well" on your way to achieving vibrant health. The minimum amount recommended by health and water scientists is four half liters ( 4 x 16.9 oz. bottles -approximately two quarts) per day, but will vary depending upon your body size and physical and mental activity.

THE UNIVERSAL SOLVENT

The dissolving property of water is what makes it such an extraordi¬nary element for life on the planet and so fundamental to our health and well-being. Water's solubility is what drives nutrition; all living or¬ganisms need water to dissolve the substances they use for food. Plant roots can absorb nutrients only when they are in solution, and we hu¬mans need our food to be dissolved before it can enter our bloodstream and truly feed us. This points out the need for adequate hydration and the importance of consuming a high quality of water with good hydra¬tion and dissolving properties, throughout the day. Not all water is cre¬ated equal by nature or by the numerous companies involved in the bottling and distribution of water today. And now new water science and advanced water technology are able to improve the structure, per¬meability, and dissolvability of water, as well as its nutrient value. Water is both the carrier for nutrition to the cell and the carrier for waste and toxins out of the cell and out of the body. Consuming an adequate quantity and a high quality of water that is considered more alive and energetic due to its hydrating and nutritional properties is a simple, yet fundamental step in achieving vibrant health and wellness.

THE NEW THINKING ABOUT HEALTH AND WATER

Before we get to the confluence of water and vibrant health, let's start with some basic facts and new scientific thinking about water. You have learned that the primary function of water in the body is to act as a solvent. It is the solvent-the water and its electrical/chemical content-that regulates all the functions of the body. Now the new scien¬tific thinking about water and the body is this: Any disturbance in water metabolism due to dehydration, stored toxic waste, or impure water consumption causes a disturbance in cellular activity. This dis¬turbance causes a loss of electrical flow and a breakdown in chemical reactions. All chemical reactions in the body produce energy. If, for any reason, the chemical reactions and energy flow are slowed or get blocked, distress may develop, imbalances occur, performance at all levels begins to break down, and dis-ease follows. Few of us have been informed of the basic facts about water and these simple, scientific truths. Therefore, few of us understand the absolute, critical value of water and hydration in our daily health care, nor the value of drinking the right kind of water that will provide adequate “cellular” hydration. When we look at the fundamentals that lead to optimum health and peak perfor¬mance, right on top of the list is, "Drink the right quality of water in the right quantity, for right hydration."

RIGHT WATER FOR RIGHT HYDRATION

The reason water is not "just water" anymore is because of three principal facts: First, no two waters are the same. Each water available today has a different source, with different properties and different names. There is tap water, well water, bottled water, filtered water, puri¬fied water, spring water, artesian water, mineral water, distilled water, soft water, hard water, deionized water, electrolyzed water, structured water, etc. Like food, some water is pure, alive, and wholesome, while some is lifeless, or worse still, the harbinger of disease and possible death. Second, not all waters have the same hydrating ability. Therefore, just going through the ritual of drinking your daily requirement of water may not satisfy your body's need for hydration. In studying hy¬dration, scientists have determined that water and hydration may be adequate around the outside of the cell, but without the right kind of water with the right electrical/chemical mix and proper surface ten¬sion, the water can't flow into the cell. The result is cellular dehydra¬tion. Third, the new science of water has arrived and there are now available Advanced Drinking, SPA, Sport, and Nutritionally Formulated Wa¬ters that are scientifically designed and enhanced.

GET HYDRATED! GET HEALTHY!

In looking further at the research in regard to water and hydration, it has been shown that when the body cells are hydrated, they become enlarged and trigger a healing mechanism. This healing mechanism is the result of such things as a reduction in cellular acidity, increased fat burning, and the repair of DNA. Congruently, research also shows that when the body becomes dehydrated, the cells become deflated and trig¬ger the opposite of healing, or sickness, in the cells. This begins with a buildup of cellular acid and toxemia. Toxemia leads to oxygen starva¬tion, possible damage to DNA, and the acceleration of aging, owing to free radical damage. Therefore, the priority for the future of health and wellness should be: Get Hydrated-Stay Hydrated!

DON'T DRINK THE WATER UNLESS IT HAS BEEN PURIFIED

On the one hand, water's universal dissolving properties are what bring life to our planet and drive the state of our human health and nu¬trition. On the other hand, its dissolving properties can also lead to our self-poisoning. Whatever chemicals and toxins we dump into our earth's water bodies and ecosystem will also be dissolved and eventually find their way into our human bodies. Rainwater dissolves the chemical gasses and particulates we pump into the air and brings them back to earth to fill our rivers, lakes, streams, oceans, and underground aquifers. Rainwater falls on land and soaks into the soil, dissolving and picking up whatever it comes in contact with, such things as pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, and man-made chemicals. It then flows to the surface as spring water or we pump it out of the ground through arte¬sian wells for our personal and commercial use. Water's solubility is therefore both a blessing and, today, a curse. A wide-ranging govern¬ment report concludes that much of the nation's groundwater and un¬derground aquifers are contaminated with unhealthy levels of chemicals. According to a statement by the EPA in August 1999, "Five million acres of lakes and 30,000 miles of rivers and shorelines are not fit for swimming and fishing" in the United States. You don't need to be a scientist or chemist to figure out that if you can't swim in it or eat the fish that live in it, you sure don't want to be drinking it. Consequently, the water we drink, whatever the source (local, regional, national, global), will be best when purified and cleansed of all natural or man¬made contamination.

THE FLOW OF YOUR BODY OF WATER

Although estimates vary, the human body is two-thirds water and accounts for approximately 50 percent of our body weight. Much of the variance depends on age, physical condition, and sex. An infant's body, with little fat and low bone mass, is 75 percent water, and total body water content generally declines as we age. In old age, only 40 to 50 per¬cent of our body weight may be attributed to water. Women, with gen¬erally more body fat than men, have a lower percentage of water because fat contains the least water of all body tissues.

The water in your body is always flowing and on the move and oc¬cupies fluid compartments known as intracellular and extracellular. Intracellular fluid makes up about two-thirds of your body fluid and is contained within the living cells. The rest, extracellular fluid, refers to all body fluids outside the cells; this includes blood plasma, interstitial (tissue) fluid, lymph, and cerebrospinal and serous fluids, among oth¬ers. Water's polarity (its electrical charge) along with its dissolving and nutritional properties are what gives water its life. Collectively these properties give water its extraordinary abilities to bring life and carry energy throughout the body. Nutrients, wastes, and gases are moved about in blood plasma and then passed between blood and tissue cells through interstitial fluid. Water is also vital for digestion, where it acts as a reactant in the chemical reactions that break down food. As a body lubricant, water is dispensable, serving in the form of saliva to moisten and prepare food for digestion, as well as in other fluids that reduce friction between internal organs or between bones. For elimination, water is also active, not only in the form of urine, but also in the mucus that lines the intestines to aid in the passage of feces. Last, water serves a protective function in the form of cerebrospinal fluid that cushions the brain and amniotic fluid that envelops and protects a fetus.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MINERALS AND ELECTROLYTES

In addition to the specific physiological functions of water in the human body, water is also directly linked to mineral and electrolyte balance. The body's equilibrium, known as homeostasis, is affected by both the mineral and electrolyte balance of its fluids. Electrolyte bal¬ance refers to the types and amounts of electrolytes in body fluids. Electrolyte balance is essential because even the slightest change in elec¬trolyte concentrations can cause water to move from one fluid com¬partment to another, causing an alteration in blood pressure and volume, among other things.

Electolytes in the body are often referred to as mineral ions, and the salt concentrations in the body fluids of mammals are remarkably sim¬ilar to salt concentrations in seawater. Generally speaking, electrolytes are responsible for the transfer of electrical energy in the body, and many health experts also believe that electrolytes are needed for metab¬olizing vitamins and for enzymatic activity. Regarding energy transfer, water itself cannot carry an electrical charge; it is through minerals and electrolytes that water carries an electrical charge. Each human body requires sufficient amounts of seven macrominerals: calcium, phos¬phorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, chloride, and magnesium, and trace amounts of others. Most minerals and electrolytes are consumed in food and water, and the electrolyte composition of body fluids is regu¬lated by the kidney primarily through the use of hormones. ABOUT MINERAL WATERS

There is an ongoing debate today about the consumption of mineral waters. In Europe mineral water is valued both for drinking and bathing. On this side of the ocean, some scientists and health-care practitioners believe consuming mineral waters is like trying to con¬sume the rocks in your driveway. In addition, the carbonation of many popular mineral waters is not recommended for your health as it leads to the creation of body acids.

The arguments against consuming mineral waters include the fol¬lowing: the mineral content is unpredictable and varies with every source; the minerals may be too large in size to be broken down by the body and thus get stuck in your kidneys, joints, and skeletal structure; the minerals are rarely, if ever, biobalanced or in correct proportions to meet the needs of our body fluids; and finally, for every good mineral in a particular source, there is usually a variety of not-so-good or toxic minerals or even heavy metals. I will leave it up to you to decide, but to be on the safe side, I recommend a water that has been purified of all mineral contaminants and fortified or remineralized with a dietary for¬mulation that is biobalanced to more adequately meet the mineral/ electrolyte needs of your body fluids.

ABOUT BOTTLED WATER

Contrary to popular belief, bottled water isn't always cleaner and safer than tap water, according to a recent report by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The New York-based environ¬mental advocacy group tested more than 100 brands of bottled water and found that about one third of them violated stringent state and federal purity standards.255 What's more, the image of that clear moun¬tain spring on the label may be misleading. According to government and industry estimates, 25 to 40 percent of bottled water sold in the United States comes from the public water systems-"tap water, essen¬tially;' the NRDC notes.256 While federal officials say that no illness has ever been linked to bottled water, the NRDC contends that those with fragile "immune systems" could be at risk. This is particularly impor¬tant for children.

This is why I recommend all water sources be purified of all mineral and chemical contaminants, whether natural or man-made. Preferably the purified water is remineralized and fortified with the proper bal¬ance of minerals and electrolytes for maximum hydration and benefit.

OBTAINING ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS FROM WATER AND DETOXING YOUR BODY

Obtaining essential nutrients from water is a recent discovery and is believed to be vital to the future of our health and wellness. It is impor¬tant, first, because water is a natural carrier and delivery system for nu¬trition. Second, it is important because many of the foods that are grown today are cultivated in agricultural areas that are dependent on the use of chemicals for growing and have been depleted of valuable minerals and nutrients. Therefore, if your water of choice has been cleaned, purified properly of all contaminants and pollutants, and for¬tified and enhanced with a proper mineral and electrolyte formulation, it becomes a superior carrier and advanced delivery system for mineral and electrolyte replacement and for nutrition.

Providing the body with high-quality minerals and nutrition is im¬portant, but cleansing, balancing, and detoxifying the body of harmful acids and toxins is equally important. If there is, in fact, such a thing as a "secret" to health, cleansing of the inner body is surely it. The cleaner and more alive the water is to carry nutrition to the cell, the more active and able it will be to carry waste and toxins out of the cells and out of the body.

YOUR BODY pH AND THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING AN ALKALINE STATE

Like mineral and electrolyte balance the pH and acid-alkaline bal¬ance of body fluids plays a significant role in maintaining homeostasis and good health. The measure known as pH is the quantitative measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a substance or solution. The pH scale is based on the number of hydrogen ions (positively charged atoms) in solution, and runs from 0 to 14. Ordinary water, with an equal amount of hydrogen ions and hydroxyl ions (negatively charged), is measured as neutral, or as having a pH of 7. Numbers below 7.0 indicate acid so¬lutions, while numbers above 7.0 indicate alkaline, or base, solutions.

Like salts, which are excellent conductors of electrical impulses in the human body, the inorganic compounds (compounds lacking carbon) known as acids and bases are electrolytes because they conduct an elec¬trical current once they have been ionized and dissolved in water.

The reason pH is so important for health is that living cells are ultra¬sensitive to any changes in pH. Acid-base balance is therefore carefully maintained in body fluids by the kidneys, lungs, and certain chemicals called buffers. The acid-base balance, or pH, of blood is especially im¬portant because blood comes into close contact with nearly every living cell in the body. Blood pH is maintained within a very narrow range, from 7.35 to 7.45; variances in anything more than a few tenths will most likely result in death. Acidic foods and beverages we consume af¬fect the body's pH, as do environmental contaminants in the air we breathe and toxins that result from our agricultural practices. In fact, the acid-alkaline state of our bodies and the need to maintain a healthy alkaline balance in our diets is a largely overlooked issue in today's health, fitness, and our physical energy. Drinking alkaline water and consuming alkaline foods are the way of the future when it comes to preventive health care and medicine.

A NATURAL SOLUTION FOR VIBRANT HEALTH

Medical studies and reports in the United States point to the fact that dehydration and stored acidic toxic waste are the biggest problems in today's national and global health crisis. This is supported by studies and reports from Europe and Japan. The Japanese scientists claim that the underlying natural causes of adult diseases is the accumulation of acids in our body, poor blood circulation, and poor cell activity. Samples of adult diseases are cancer, heart disease, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, gout, kidney disease, chronic diar¬rhea and constipation, hemorrhoids, asthma, hay fever, allergies, head¬aches, neuralgia, psoriasis, hives, eczema, hyperacidity, indigestion, gas, nausea, obesity, tooth and gum diseases, osteoporosis, leg cramps, hangovers, and morning sickness. Medical researchers today spend bil¬lions of dollars on developing medicine to battle every kind of adult disease. Unfortunately, as I have stated most emphatically, none of the drugs help reduce the acidity and toxemia of the body. In fact, most of the drugs are acidic and cause even more body acid that must be re¬moved for healing to occur. According to the Japanese and many of today's leading American and European health and medical practition¬ers, unless the treatment actually removes acids and toxins from the body, the "cure" will be temporary at best.

WATER ETIQUETTE FOR WATER PEOPLE AND VIBRANT HEALTH

To assist in removing and balancing the harmful effects of body acid, get in the habit of drinking approximately two liters per day of the highest quality water you can, and when possible consume a water that is mildly alkaline. An enhanced and structured alkaline water with a pH of 8.5-9.5 is recommended to help balance the acidic nature of our diets and lifestyles. (Most bottled waters and municipal tap water sources have a neutral pH of 7.0.) In addition, slowly replace your other beverages, especially the acidic ones, with alkaline water. Colas, coffee, tea, alcoholic beverages, milk, and isotonic sports drinks are highly acidic and do not qualify as water. They also act as a diuretic, which means they pull water out of the cells and body. Therefore, you need to consume even more water than normal to counteract their ef¬fects. So, to become water-wise in the future, get in the habit of drink¬ing an alkaline water to help neutralize body acid and to help hydrate and energize your body and brain. Drink extra when you'll need it be¬cause of hot or dry weather, exercise, alcohol, cola and caffeine con¬sumption, illness, air travel, and heavy meals. To help your body with the energy-intensive demands of digestion, drink a glass of alkaline water before mealtimes (10-20 minutes is most desirable). In fact, when eating out, it is advisable to carry your own alkaline water with you to drink (6-8 ounces) at room temperature before you order your meal. You may also want to get in the habit of visiting fine restaurants and dining establishments that understand the importance of serving an alkaline water for a maximum dining experience. And endeavor to satisfy your thirst sensation with water-not colas, sodas, teas, sugared beverages, or flavored waters. There is evidence that, with increased pure" water drinking throughout the day, the thirst mechanism be¬comes more efficient.

In many ways, it is interesting that all of the things to disregard in our health-care practices, we have ignored and generally allowed our¬selves to neglect one of the body's most basic needs, water! Market forces and product advertising play a big role in our water and beverage choices, and this is further encouraged by something we've not yet mentioned-the actual taste and quality of water that comes into our homes and offices and that is found on the shelves of retail stores.

THE SILKY SMOOTH TASTE OF ALKALINE WATER

What people normally mean when they say they don't like water is that they don't like the taste of water. Alkaline water is smooth, refresh¬ing, and satisfyingly good. There is a freshness and sweetness to it that is unmistakable. Water with a mild alkaline content is different from ordinary water with a neutral pH. Water and health scientists often refer to ordinary water as lifeless, or "dead water." Dead water may be purified water that has been drained of its mineral-electrolyte content and thus its electrical energy and life force, or it may be bottled or tap water that is burdened by source contaminants or toxic substances. Anyone who has ever been sick knows what it feels like to be low in en¬ergy or energetically depressed from sickness or disease. In contrast, an alkaline water with the right balance of minerals and electrolytes has an uplifting force to it that truly quenches the thirst like no other beverage. Of course, no two waters will taste exactly the same. Alkalinity and the right mineral-electrolyte composition have effects on the taste of water, as do temperature and water purity. But one thing is certain, once you have experienced the alive taste of an advanced alkaline water, you will never forget it. And drinking alkaline water is a simple secret to balanc¬ing the harmful effects of body acids and a natural step to vibrant health. Many people, in fact, have a favorite kind of water or water source and refuse to drink any other kind. It's also true that many peo¬ple have never in their lives tasted water the way water was meant to be.

Modern municipal and public water is treated with chemicals and ad¬ditives that not only affect the taste of the water but also take away its life force, or have undesirable mineral combinations from natural sources that affect their taste.

ADVANCED WATER TECHNOLOGY

Technological advancements in the processing and treatment of water are far beyond what most of us are currently aware of. In just a few short years we have moved from the need to filter our basic tap water to the need to purify and now enhance the water for its maxi¬mum benefit. The basic filtration and purifying methods like carbon and ceramic filtration, reverse osmosis, distillation, ultraviolet radia¬tion, ozonation, and others are familiar enough. But there is now a growing new science that works with properties of quantum physics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetic field theory. This new science is bringing the future of water and producing new understandings about water and its relationship to vibrant health, wellness, and life itself.

The best place to start in the new science and technology of water is perhaps with the relatively new types of enhanced or structured waters. More than any of the emerging water technologies, structured water (called microwater in Japan) is the most widely studied and available today. Structured water is produced through electrolysis. While elec¬trolysis was discovered and invented in the United States, it was the Russians and then the Japanese that designed it for commercial use and began the treatment and enhancing of water. The Japanese interest and experience in structured water dates back over thirty years.

To create a structured water, generally the source water is filtered and purified to remove bacteriological and mineral contaminants, bad tastes, odors, and chlorine. The minerals and electrolytes that are pres¬ent in the water or that are added back by special formulation are elec¬trically charged and then separated into alkaline-concentrated water and acidic-concentrated water. In other words, water which generally has a neutral pH of 7.0, is enhanced and divided into two types of water, one with a pH lower than 7.0 (acidic) and one with a pH higher than 7.0 (alkaline).

WATER WITH ANTIOXIDANT SUPPORT

In 1965, the Japanese ministry of health and welfare certified that al¬kaline structured-microwater assisted in the alleviation of gastroin¬testinal disorders, acidosis, chronic diarrhea, and poor digestion; and it credited the acidic water with beneficial astringent properties for the skin. There is also much documentation to support many other health benefits for the alkaline structured water, including relief of constipa¬tion and lowering of blood pressure. The health benefits are believed to be the result of three main characteristics associated with the water: first, smaller, more permeable water cluster; second, the alkalinity; and third, added electrons which have been reported to have antioxidant properties, from the electrolysis process. These three factors work to¬gether to enhance the natural benefits of water, specifically, the smaller water clusters (water molecule chains) add to permeability and solubil¬ity of the water, which aids in hydration and in the ability of water to dissolve food and wastes for transportation and elimination. The alka¬linity of the water aids in the pH balancing of the body and supplies al¬kaline minerals and electrolytes, while the added electrons affect the oxidation reduction potential of the water to make the water an antiox¬idant support mechanism.

DRINK BETTER-THE FOUR RIGHTS OF WATER

Now that we have taken a closer look at the role and importance of water in achieving vibrant health and wellness, I would like to issue to you the challenge to Drink Better! We often take water and its life¬giving properties for granted. But with the level of contamination in our air, food, and water supplies, and the lack of nutrient value in many of our commercially produced foods today, we can no longer afford this ignorance and oversight.

The element of water has directed and influenced the course of human history and civilizations since the birth of humanity. Water, as the womb of life, has everything to teach us about living. We would be wise to observe, explore, and apply what we can learn from the magic and metaphor of water. I invite you to apply your "water rights" and what has been identi¬fied as:

THE FOUR RIGHTS OF WATER
